We have seen an increase in threats to school safety posted on social media platforms or in text messages. We treat threats on digital media—and all threats—seriously. All threats are reported to Safety & Security and law enforcement and are investigated.
Upon investigation, most social media threats are found to be not credible. In the vast majority of cases, there is no plan to carry out the threat. Some threats have been traced to IP addresses located out of state. Other threats have been made by students as a hoax or to scare, with no intent to harm anyone.
Students may not be aware that posting a threat on social media, text, or any digital media is a crime that can carry serious legal consequences. For example, in a recent case of a social media threat to one of our schools, the student was arrested and the case forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
Please talk with your student about the seriousness of making any kind of threat, even as a joke. We do not want a student to unknowingly take an action that could have life-altering consequences.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students and schools safe.
